Somerville, Milton in Mass. are among best places to live, Money says

Two Massachusetts municipalities have been listed among the best places to live in the U.S., according to Money.

The annual list ranks of the top places to live by looking “at the things that matter most to people: economic opportunities, quality of life, diversity, and where the best futures lie,” the website states.

Somerville made the top 10 in the list, placing 7th.

“Some cities have July 4th parades. Others have a holiday tree lighting. In Somerville, Massachusetts? They celebrate marshmallow fluff,” Money wrote.

It also suggests checking out the Museum of Bad Art, shopping at Assembly Row and watching a performance at the Somerville Theatre. It also has “some of the most affordable home prices in the area,” a well-rated school district, and is one of the safest cities in the country, according to the crime and safety experts at Safewise, Money reported.

According to Zillow, the average home value in Somerville is $860,364.

The website notes the “most unique thing about Somerville” is its Department of Racial and Social Justice.

“A newly created branch of the mayor’s office, the department works to eliminate inequities in the community and within local policing and public safety efforts,” the website explains. “It has even established a Youth Justice League to connect with local teens on these very topics.”

Milton also made the overall list, placing 17th.

“With its tree-lined streets, turn-of-the-century Colonial-style homes and quaint historic district, Milton seems more like a charming, small town than a bustling suburb of Boston,” Money wrote. “But don’t let its picturesque qualities fool you. The city of 28,000 has plenty else going for it.”

The website suggested visiting the Blue Hill Observatory & Science Center.

“Open since 1885, the climate research center offers kite-making workshops, balloon launches, meteorology programs and guided hikes through the Blue Hills Reservation — a 7,000-acre state park where, depending on the season, you’ll find locals skiing, rock climbing or relaxing by the Reservation’s spring-fed pond,” it stated.

Money also pointed to the proximity to Boston, it is more affordable housing prices than other areas and safety.

According to Zillow, the average home value in Milton is $929,270.
